EU AI Act Compliance

WayToFrench is committed to responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence. This page explains how we comply with the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), which came into force on 1 August 2024. As a platform offering AI-powered language learning tools to users including those in the European Union, we take these obligations seriously.
1. AI Systems We Use
WayToFrench uses AI in the following areas of the platform:
Writing Studio
AI evaluates user-submitted French essays, provides grammar corrections, vocabulary suggestions, structural feedback, and a predicted exam band score (TCF/DELF/TEF). Powered by large language model APIs.
Speaking Studio
AI analyses pronunciation and spoken French, provides feedback on fluency, accuracy, and exam readiness.
Sentence Rewriter / Synonym Finder / Gender Checker
AI-assisted tools that process user-entered French text to suggest improvements or provide linguistic information.
Connector Builder / Word Counter
AI or rule-based tools to help users identify connective words and analyse writing samples.
General Grammar & Vocabulary Exercises
Automated question generation and answer evaluation using AI.
2. Risk Classification
Under the EU AI Act, AI systems are classified by risk level. WayToFrench's AI systems are classified as Limited Risk (Article 52) and Minimal Risk:
AI tools that interact with users (Writing Studio, Speaking Studio) — users are notified they are interacting with an AI system, not a human tutor, in accordance with Article 52(1).
Grammar tools, vocabulary aids, and exercise generators — these pose no significant risk and require no additional obligations beyond general data protection.
WayToFrench does not deploy any AI systems classified as High Risk under Annex III of the EU AI Act (e.g., systems affecting employment, education credentials, or essential services access).
3. Transparency & User Notification
In compliance with Article 52 (Transparency obligations), we:
- Clearly label all AI-generated content and feedback as being produced by an AI system, not a qualified human examiner.
- Do not impersonate human coaches or examiners in our AI tools.
- Display notices within the Writing Studio and Speaking Studio indicating that feedback is AI-generated.
- Do not use AI to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on users.
4. Data & AI Model Information
- Our AI writing and speaking feedback features use third-party large language model APIs (e.g., OpenAI or equivalent). We do not train our own foundation models.
- User-submitted text (essays, spoken input) is processed by these APIs solely for the purpose of generating feedback. We do not use your submissions to train AI models.
- Data submitted through AI tools is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection law (GDPR).
- AI feedback scores and band predictions are indicative only and are not official exam results. Users should not rely solely on AI scores for exam preparation decisions.
5. Your Rights
As a user, you have the right to:
- Know when you are interacting with an AI system rather than a human.
- Request a human review of any AI-generated assessment by contacting our support team.
- Opt out of AI-powered features where technically feasible — contact us to discuss alternatives.
- Access, correct, or delete personal data processed by our AI systems under GDPR.
- Lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority if you believe your rights have been violated.
