Level B2 — Day 4

The Double Pronoun Cascade with Indirect Objects

Why This Structure Unlocks B2 Production

Pronoun stacking is where fluency becomes visible — or breaks down. Native speakers compress complex information into tight pronoun sequences without a second thought. At B2, you need to do the same: produce and parse dense chains like je ne les lui ai pas encore envoyées without hesitation.

DELF B2 oral production tasks (interviews, debates, role-plays) are where this skill is most tested. Repeating nouns when a pronoun cluster would do signals B1-level output. Mastering the cascade means your speech flows at native speed, your writing stays compact, and your comprehension of fast-spoken French improves dramatically.

🦝 Remy says: "In the DELF B2 Exercice en interaction, examiners listen for how naturally you replace and reference. If your partner says Tu as envoyé les documents à la directrice ? and you answer Oui, j'ai envoyé les documents à la directrice — that's A2. Answer Oui, je les lui ai envoyés hier matin and you're at B2. The pronoun cluster is the speed test of your fluency."

Core Lesson

The Expanded Order Chart

Every French pronoun has a fixed position relative to the verb. The order is absolute — you cannot rearrange it.

[Subject] → [me/te/se/nous/vous] → [le/la/les] → [lui/leur] → [y] → [en] → [Verb]

Practical reading: Start from the right and ask: what replaces the direct object? What replaces the indirect object? What place or abstract reference does y stand for? What quantity or substance does en replace?

The Key Pairings at B2

me/te/nous/vous + le/la/les (most common in writing):

  • Il me l'a expliqué. — He explained it to me.
  • Nous vous les avons transmis dès réception. — We transmitted them to you upon receipt.

le/la/les + lui/leur (most common in narrative):

  • Le rapport ? Je ne le lui ai pas encore soumis. — The report? I haven't submitted it to him yet.
  • Elle leur les a... ❌ → She les leur a transmis. — She transmitted them to them. (lui/leur always follows le/la/les)

y and en in complex frames:

  • Je devrais pouvoir les y accompagner. — I should be able to accompany them there.
  • Il refuse de m'en parler. — He refuses to speak to me about it.

Critical Rule: y and en Side by Side

The combination y + en exists only in the fixed idiom il y en a (there is some / there are some). Creating novel y + en stacks is awkward and usually avoidable. Rephrase or restructure instead.

  • Il y en a encore. — There are still some.
  • Je t'y en enverrai. — Grammatically possible but sounds forced. Rephrase: Je t'en enverrai là-bas.

Negation Wrapping

In a negative sentence, ne and pas (or plus, jamais, rien) wrap around the entire pronoun-verb block:

  • Je ne le lui ai pas encore rendu. — I haven't returned it to him yet.
  • Elle ne nous en avait pas informés. — She hadn't informed us of it.
  • Il ne me l'a jamais dit. — He never told me it.

Infinitive Anchoring

With modal verbs (vouloir, devoir, pouvoir, faire, laisser), pronouns attach to the infinitive, not the modal:

  • Je veux le lui montrer. — I want to show it to him. *(NOT: Je le lui veux montrer.)
  • Il faut les y habituer. — They need to be accustomed to it.
  • Il refuse de m'en parler. — He refuses to speak to me about it.

The Imperative Flip

In positive commands, pronouns move after the verb and are joined by hyphens. Me/te become moi/toiexcept before y or en, where they contract back to m'/t'.

StructureExample
Positive command + single pronounDonne-le-moi !
Positive command + pronoun + yConduis-m'y ! (NOT: Conduis-moi-y)
Positive command + pronoun + enParle-m'en !
Positive command + two pronounsEnvoyez-les-leur !

Negative commands keep the standard pre-verb order:

  • Ne le lui donne pas ! — Don't give it to him!

B1 → B2 Upgrade Table

B1 ExpressionB2 Expression
Je lui ai donné les clés.Je les lui ai données.
Je n'ai pas envoyé le rapport à Marie.Je ne le lui ai pas envoyé.
Tu dois t'habituer à ce système.Tu dois t'y habituer.
Parle à moi de ça !Parle-m'en !

🦝 Remy's Exam Strategy: "In the DELF B2 written production, avoid pronoun stacks in your very first sentence — they can obscure meaning if the antecedent is unclear. Introduce nouns first, then substitute with pronouns in the follow-up sentence. This technique — called anaphoric substitution — demonstrates discourse-level coherence management, which is explicitly assessed in the B2 scoring grid under cohérence et cohésion."

🎯 Today's Challenge

Write a 3-sentence exchange (question + two responses) in which a colleague asks about a document, a task, and a location. Each response must use at least one double-pronoun construction. Model the exchange on a professional workplace scenario.

⭐ Key Takeaways

  • The order is fixed: [me/te/se/nous/vous] → [le/la/les] → [lui/leur] → [y] → [en]. Memorize this sequence as a single unit. Any deviation is an error.
  • Negation wraps the entire cluster: ne...pas/plus/jamais bracket the pronoun-verb block as a unit. Never split the pronouns out of this bracket.
  • Imperative reversal is a distinct system: Positive commands flip pronouns post-verb with hyphens and trigger moi/toi forms — except before y/en where they contract to m'/t'. This is a DELF grammar section favorite because it has multiple interacting rules in a small space.

Practice Exercises

Reconstruct the Clause

Reorder the structural fragments into coherent B2 clauses.

  1. (je / ne / lui / les / ai / pas / données) → Les clés ? ___ .
  2. (tu / devrais / t' / y / habituer) → C'est un nouveau système, ___ .
  3. (ne / m' / en / parle / plus) → C'est un sujet délicat, ___ !
  4. (il / nous / l' / a / confirmée) → La nouvelle ? ___ hier soir.
  5. (elle / les / leur / a / transmis) → Les documents confidentiels ? ___ dès ce matin.
Compress and Transform

Compress each sentence by replacing the underlined elements with pronouns in the correct order.

  1. Il a expliqué la procédure à ses collègues.
  2. Elle n'a pas encore remis le dossier à la commission.
  3. Nous devons habituer les enfants à cette règle.
  4. Dis cette information à moi ! (imperative)

Model Answers:

  1. Il la leur a expliquée.
  2. Elle ne le lui a pas encore remis.
  3. Nous devons les y habituer.
  4. Dis-le-moi !
Production

Write 2 original sentences:

  • One negative sentence with at least two stacked pronouns (le lui / les leur / m'en / les y).
  • One positive imperative command with a pronoun cascade (-le-moi / -les-leur / -m'en).
