Advanced Logical Connectors — Or, Certes, Cependant, Toutefois

Why this matters for DELF B2

The DELF B2 essai argumenté is assessed in part on cohérence et cohésion — how logically your ideas are sequenced and how smoothly your transitions work. Generic connectors like mais, donc, and alors are B1 infrastructure. At B2, examiners expect you to differentiate between concession (certes), measured contrast (cependant / toutefois), logical pivot (or), and positive counterpoint (en revanche). Each connector carries a distinct logical weight, and choosing the right one — rather than defaulting to mais — signals genuine discourse management.

🦝 Remy says: "In the DELF B2 production écrite, your transitions are your argument. Certes says: I acknowledge your point, but I am about to dismantle it. Or says: here is a fact that changes everything. Cependant says: I concede the difficulty, but I maintain my position. These are not decorations — they are the logic of your essay made visible. Use them precisely or not at all."

Core Lesson

Connector 1 — Or (Yet / Now / However — the Logical Pivot)

Or is one of the most powerful and misunderstood connectors in formal French. It introduces a fact, observation, or piece of evidence that pivots the argument — it reveals a contradiction, a complication, or a new datum that forces a reconsideration.

It does not mean or (= ou). It is closer in meaning to now or yet in English formal prose.

(The accused claimed he had never left his home that evening. Yet, witnesses formally identified him several kilometres away.)

Or is always followed by a complete clause. It begins a new sentence or a new coordinate clause after a semicolon.

Connector 2 — Certes (Admittedly / Granted / True)

Certes is the formal concession marker. It acknowledges the opposing argument before refuting or qualifying it. In French academic writing, it typically opens the antithèse section of a plan dialectique.

Pattern: Certes + [conceded point] → Cependant / Toutefois / Néanmoins + [maintained position]

Connector 3 — Cependant / Toutefois (However / Nevertheless)

Both signal measured contrast — they acknowledge an opposing element without fully conceding the argument. They are largely interchangeable in register, though toutefois tends to be slightly more formal and cependant more common in essay writing.

Both can open a sentence or follow a semicolon. Neither should be used to introduce a strong contradiction — use or for that.

Connector 4 — En revanche (On the other hand / By contrast)

En revanche introduces a positive alternative or clean contrast — not a contradiction, but a different perspective that compensates or redirects.

Do not confuse en revanche with par contre — they are semantically similar but par contre is considered less appropriate in formal written registers.

The Full Contrast Matrix

| Connector | Function | When to use | |

|

|

| | Or | Logical pivot — introduces destabilising fact | Argument reversal, contradiction of premise | | Certes | Formal concession | Opening antithèse; acknowledging opposing view | | Cependant | Measured contrast | Maintaining position despite an acknowledged difficulty | | Toutefois | Measured contrast (slightly more formal) | Same as cependant, essay register | | En revanche | Positive counterpoint | Introducing a compensating or contrasting positive element | | Néanmoins | Strong concession maintained | Concession + firm reaffirmation of thesis |

B1 → B2 Upgrade Table

| B1 Connector | B2 Equivalent | Nuance Added | |

|

|

| | mais | cependant / toutefois | Formal contrast, not blunt opposition | | et pourtant | or | Logical pivot with rhetorical weight | | c'est vrai que... mais | certes... cependant | Classic concession-rebuttal structure | | d'un autre côté | en revanche | Formal positive alternative |

🦝 Remy's exam strategy: "Structure every body paragraph of your DELF B2 essay using the certes... cependant arc: open with certes to show you understand the counterargument, then pivot with cependant or toutefois to reaffirm your thesis. In the concluding synthesis, use or to introduce the definitive fact that tilts the argument in your favour. This is the architecture of a well-organised plan dialectique — and it maps exactly to the B2 production scoring rubric."

📝 Exercise 1 — Insert the best connector

Choose from: Or, Certes, Cependant, Toutefois, En revanche

Answers:

  1. Cependant (or Toutefois) — measured contrast
  2. Certes — formal concession
  3. Or — logical pivot, destabilising fact
  4. En revanche — positive counterpoint
  5. Toutefois (or Cependant) — measured constraint on an accepted claim

📝 Exercise 2 — Rewrite / Elevate the register

Replace the B1 connector with a more precise B2 equivalent:

  4. "Or, les preuves disponibles contredisent formellement cette thèse."

📝 Exercise 3 — Production

Write two original sentences or a short passage (3-4 sentences) using the certes... cependant concession arc on a topic of your choice (urbanisation, digital technology, public transport).

🎯 Today's Challenge

Write a 4-sentence paragraph responding to:

Use: certes (to concede an opposing view), or (to introduce a decisive fact), and en revanche (to highlight a positive counterpoint). Formal essay register.

⭐ Key Takeaways

  • Or is not ou — it is a logical pivot that introduces a contradicting or complicating fact. It is one of the most powerful words in formal French argumentation.
  • Certes... cependant / toutefois is the standard concession-rebuttal arc of the B2 plan dialectique — use it to structure your antithèse paragraph.
  • En revanche introduces a positive alternative or contrast — never use it to introduce a simple contradiction. That role belongs to cependant, toutefois, or néanmoins.
