Le Gérondif — Simultaneous Actions (En parlant)

📖 Le Gérondif — "While doing" or "By doing"\n\nIn B1, your sentences become more complex by combining actions. The Gérondif is used to show two actions happening at the exact same time, by the exact same subject.\n\nWHAT IS IT?\nIt translates to "while doing" or "by doing" something.\n- "Il travaille en écoutant de la musique." (He works while listening to music.)\n\nHOW TO FORM IT:\n🔤 Structure: EN + Participe Présent\n\nStep 1: Take the "nous" form of the present tense.\nStep 2: Remove the "-ons".\nStep 3: Add "-ant".\nStep 4: Put the word "en" in front of it.\n\nEXAMPLES:\n- Parler -> nous parlons -> parl- -> en parlant (while/by speaking)\n- Finir -> nous finissons -> finiss- -> en finissant (while/by finishing)\n- Faire -> nous faisons -> fais- -> en faisant (while/by doing)\n- Boire -> nous buvons -> buv- -> en buvant (while/by drinking)\n\nTHE 3 IRREGULAR FORMS:\nJust like the subjunctive, the most fundamental verbs are irregular:\n1. Être -> en étant (while being)\n2. Avoir -> en ayant (while having)\n3. Savoir -> en sachant (while knowing)\n\nTHE 3 USES OF THE GÉRONDIF:\n\n1. Simultanéité (At the same time):\n- "Elle lit le journal en buvant son café." \n (She reads the newspaper while drinking her coffee.)\n- "Il est tombé en faisant du ski."\n (He fell while skiing.)\n\n2. Le Moyen / La Manière (How something is done / "By" doing):\n- "Tu vas améliorer ton français en pratiquant tous les jours."\n (You will improve your French by practicing every day.)\n- "En prenant le métro, tu arriveras plus vite."\n (By taking the subway, you will arrive faster.)\n\n3. La Condition (If you do this...):\n- "En partant maintenant, on évitera les embouteillages."\n (If we leave / By leaving now, we will avoid traffic jams.)\n\nADDING "TOUT" FOR EMPHASIS:\nYou can add "tout" before the gérondif to emphasize that actions are happening simultaneously, often suggesting a contrast.\n🔤 "Il a répondu au téléphone tout en conduisant."\n(He answered the phone even while / all while driving.)
