Review Week 5 — Advanced Tenses, Logic, and Traps

Why This Matters for Your Exam

DELF B1 tests you on all structures simultaneously — a single writing task or reading passage may require conditionnel passé, si clauses, logical connectors, complex negation, and vocabulary awareness at once. This review week consolidates everything from days 27–32 so these structures are automatic, not effortful, on exam day. The TCF works the same way: a single reading passage can pack a si clause, a false friend, and a negation into three consecutive sentences, and you need to parse all three correctly to answer the comprehension questions.

🦝 Remy says: "Review is where real learning happens! Each time you revisit a structure, your brain strengthens the pathway. Think of it like walking a path through tall grass — the more you walk it, the clearer it becomes. Today, we're walking all five paths at once!"

Document Déclencheur

Blog de voyage — Extrait "Si j'avais réservé mon billet plus tôt, j'aurais économisé beaucoup d'argent. Actuellement, les prix ont doublé depuis janvier. Je n'ai ni le temps ni le budget pour changer mes plans maintenant, bien que je regrette cette erreur."

Questions:

  1. What does the blogger regret? (not booking the ticket earlier — a si clause type 3 regret)
  2. Find one example of complex négation. (ni le temps ni le budget)
  3. Which false friend appears, and what does it really mean? (actuellement = currently, not "actually")

Core Review — Days 27–32 at a Glance

Conditionnel Passé (Day 27–28 recap)

Formula: [avoir/être au conditionnel présent + participe passé]

| Pronoun | Formation | Example | |

|

--|

| | j' | aurais + pp | J'aurais voyagé | | tu | aurais + pp | Tu aurais choisi | | il/elle | aurait + pp | Elle serait partie | | nous | aurions + pp | Nous aurions fini | | vous | auriez + pp | Vous auriez pu | | ils/elles | auraient + pp | Ils seraient venus |

Used for regrets and hypothetical pasts: J'aurais dû étudier davantage. (I should have studied more.)

Si Clause Type 3 — Unreal Past (Day 29 recap)

Formula: [Si + Plus-que-parfait, Conditionnel Passé]

  • Si j'avais étudié, j'aurais réussi l'examen.
  • Si elle était partie plus tôt, elle n'aurait pas raté le train.
  • Si nous avions su, nous ne serions pas venus.

Common trap: never put a conditionnel inside the si clause itself (si j'aurais su is always wrong). The si clause takes plus-que-parfait; only the main clause takes conditionnel passé.

Logical Connectors (Day 30 recap)

| Function | Connectors | |

-|

--| | Cause | parce que, puisque, car, étant donné que | | Consequence | donc, alors, c'est pourquoi, par conséquent | | Opposition | mais, cependant, pourtant, néanmoins | | Concession | bien que + subj., même si, quoique + subj. |

Complex Négation (Day 31 recap)

  • ne...aucun/aucune → after past participle in compound tenses
  • ne...ni...ni → after past participle
  • ne...personne → after past participle
  • Never combine pas with jamais, rien, personne, aucun

False Friends (Day 32 recap)

  • actuellement = currently (not "actually")
  • sensible = sensitive (not "sensible")
  • assister à = to attend (not "to assist")
  • la librairie = bookshop (not "library")
  • passer un examen = to sit an exam (not "to pass")

🦝 Remy says: "Before every DELF writing task, do a 30-second mental checklist: Is my si clause in the right tense? Did I use a variety of connectors? Are my negations placed correctly? Did I avoid any false friends? That 30-second check is worth at least 3 extra points!"

🔊 Phonétique: In rapid mixed-structure speech, don't let aurait and aurais blur together — stress the final consonant sound lightly: il aurait vs j'aurais. Also keep the liaison in n'a aucune crisp: "na-oh-kun", not "na-kun".> 🦝 Remy says: "Before every DELF writing task, do a 30-second mental checklist: Is my si clause in the right tense? Mini-Narrative — All Five Structures Together

(If Pierre had had more time, he would have visited more museums during his stay in Paris. Unfortunately, he had no free day after Monday. Since he worked Tuesday through Friday, he only attended one conference on modern art. He's currently preparing an article about his experiences, even though he isn't satisfied with the result yet. He wants neither to rush the work nor to postpone it indefinitely. However, he thinks the final result will be great.)

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1 — Conditionnel inside the si clause

  • Si j'aurais su, je serais venu plus tôt.
  • Si j'avais su, je serais venu plus tôt.
  • Why: the si clause of type 3 always uses plus-que-parfait — conditionnel never appears directly after si.

Mistake 2 — Doubling negation with pas + jamais

  • Il n'a pas jamais visité la bibliothèque.
  • Il n'a jamais visité la bibliothèque.
  • Why: pas and jamais are mutually exclusive negation markers.

Mistake 3 — Confusing bien que with the indicative

  • Bien qu'il est fatigué, il continue à travailler.
  • Bien qu'il soit fatigué, il continue à travailler.
  • Why: bien que always triggers the subjonctif, regardless of how obviously true the fact is.

Mistake 4 — Misusing éventuellement or actuellement by direct translation

  • Actuellement, il finira par accepter.
  • Finalement, il finira par accepter.
  • Why: actuellement only ever means "currently" — it cannot substitute for "eventually" no matter how tempting the spelling looks.

Civilisation

DELF and TCF examiners are trained to notice exactly this kind of structural range — French secondary education places heavy emphasis on l'expression écrite argumentée (structured argumentative writing), where students are taught from collège onward to vary connectors and avoid repetition. This is why a paragraph mixing si clauses, négation, and connectors fluently reads as genuinely educated French, not just grammatically correct French — register and variety are assessed alongside accuracy on the official DELF grading rubric.

Recap

Recap

  • Conditionnel passé and si clause type 3 work together to express past regrets and unreal outcomes — never mix conditionnel into the si clause itself.
  • Logical connectors must match the logical relationship (cause ≠ consequence ≠ opposition) — mismatches confuse the examiner even when grammar is correct.
  • Complex négation elements (aucun, ni...ni, personne) follow the past participle; never stack them with pas.
  • False friends (actuellement, sensible, assister à, librairie) are deliberate traps in DELF reading passages — slow down whenever a word looks suspiciously English.
  • Combining several of these structures fluently in one paragraph is exactly what raises a script from a low to a high B1 score.

📝 Exercise 1 — DELF-Style Reading Passage

Read the passage and answer the questions below.

(Answer in French)
  2. What does actuellement mean in this context?
  3. Find one example of complex négation in the passage.
  4. Identify the si clause type used in the first sentence.
  5. Which connector expresses cause in the passage?

✅ Answers:

  1. Parce qu'il n'avait aucune journée libre après le lundi / parce qu'il travaillait du mardi au vendredi.
  2. Currently / at the moment.
  3. ne...aucune, ne...qu'une seule, or ne...ni...ni.
  4. Type 3 (Si + plus-que-parfait, conditionnel passé) — unreal past.
  5. Puisque.

📝 Exercise 2 — Transform / Rewrite

Rewrite each sentence using the structure indicated.

  1. Il n'a pas étudié, donc il n'a pas réussi. → (Si clause type 3)
  2. Elle est sensible. → (Use correctly in context — not as a false friend)
  3. Il n'a pas d'amis et pas d'argent. → (ne...ni...ni)
  4. J'irai peut-être à la bibliothèque demain. → (use éventuellement correctly)
  5. Il est fatigué mais il continue à travailler. → (bien que + subjonctif)

✅ Model answers:

  1. S'il avait étudié, il aurait réussi.
  2. Elle est très sensible aux émotions des autres. (sensitive — correct usage)
  3. Il n'a ni amis ni argent.
  4. J'irai éventuellement à la bibliothèque demain. (possibly — correct usage)
  5. Bien qu'il soit fatigué, il continue à travailler.

📝 Exercise 3 — Error Correction (Mixed Structures)

Identify and correct the error in each sentence.

  1. Si j'aurais su, je serais venu plus tôt.
  2. Il n'a pas jamais visité la librairie municipale pour emprunter des livres.
  3. Elle a assisté son collègue pendant la réunion.
  4. Actuellement, il finira par accepter la décision.
  5. Bien qu'il est fatigué, il continue à travailler.
  6. J'ai passé mon examen donc je suis maintenant diplômé.

✅ Corrections:

  1. Si j'avais su, je serais venu plus tôt. (Si + plus-que-parfait, not conditionnel)
  2. Il n'a jamais visité la bibliothèque municipale. (pas + jamais = error; librairie = bookshop)
  3. Elle a aidé son collègue. (assister à = to attend, not to assist)
  4. Finalement / À la longue, il acceptera la décision. (éventuellement ≠ eventually)
  5. Bien qu'il soit fatigué. (bien que + subjonctif)
  6. J'ai réussi mon examen donc je suis maintenant diplômé. (passer ≠ succeed)

📝 Exercise 4 — Choose the Correct Form

Select the correct option (a or b).

  1. (a) Si tu étudiais, tu réussirais. (b) Si tu étudierais, tu réussirais.
  2. (a) Il n'a aucune excuse. (b) Il n'a pas aucune excuse.
  3. (a) Bien qu'il pleuve, nous sortons. (b) Bien qu'il pleut, nous sortons.
  4. (a) Je vais à la bibliothèque pour emprunter un roman. (b) Je vais à la librairie pour emprunter un roman.
  5. (a) Elle est sensible aux critiques. (b) Elle est sensible pour prendre des décisions.

✅ Answers:

  1. (a) — si + imparfait, never si + conditionnel
  2. (a) — never combine pas with aucune
  3. (a) — bien que requires the subjonctif
  4. (a) — you borrow from a bibliothèque, not a librairie (a shop)
  5. (a) — sensible means sensitive, so (b) misuses it as if it meant "sensible/reasonable"

📝 Exercise 5 — Short Production

Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) using:

  • One si clause type 3
  • One complex négation
  • One logical connector of concession
  • One false friend used correctly

✅ Sample answer: Si j'avais mieux planifié mon emploi du temps, je n'aurais eu aucun problème pour finir le rapport à temps. Bien que j'aie travaillé tard tous les soirs, je n'ai réussi qu'à terminer la moitié du travail. Actuellement, je cherche une solution pour ne plus jamais me retrouver dans cette situation. Je ne veux ni recommencer cette erreur ni décevoir mon équipe.

(If I had planned my schedule better, I wouldn't have had any problem finishing the report on time. Even though I worked late every night, I only managed to finish half the work. I'm currently looking for a solution so I never find myself in this situation again. I want neither to repeat this mistake nor to disappoint my team.)

📝 Exercise 6 — Mini-Dialogue Completion

Complete the dialogue with the correct form of the verb or connector in brackets.

Julie : Si tu m'_______ (dire) plus tôt, j'aurais pu t'aider ! Marc : Je sais, mais _______ (bien que / puisque) j'étais très occupé, je n'ai pas eu le temps de t'appeler. Julie : Tu n'as _______ (aucun / rien) excuse valable ! Marc : _______ (actuellement / en fait), je pense que tu as raison.

✅ Answers:

  • avais dit
  • puisque
  • aucune
  • en fait

🚀 Agissons !

Find a French travel blog or forum post online and identify one si clause type 3 (regret) and one false friend used correctly. Then write your own 4-5 sentence paragraph about a past regret, combining a si clause type 3, a complex négation, and a logical connector — exactly as this review week requires.

🎯 Today's Challenge

🎯 Today's Challenge

Write a short paragraph (4–5 sentences) using:

  • One si clause type 3
  • One complex négation
  • One logical connector of concession
  • One false friend used correctly

⭐ Key Takeaways

  • The most common errors on DELF B1 combine tense mistakes in si clauses with incorrect negation placement — review both together before the exam.
  • Always verify that a logical connector matches the relationship between your ideas: cause ≠ consequence ≠ opposition.
  • False friends appear in DELF reading passages as deliberate traps — slow down when you see a word that looks English.

Bonjour! Prêt à continuer la leçon? Allons-y!
