Why This Matters for Your Exam

At B1, expressing regrets or actions that could have happened but didn't is an essential conversational skill — DELF oral production often asks candidates to reflect on past choices ("Qu'auriez-vous fait différemment ?"). It also appears in journalistic French (news reports), which shows up in DELF reading passages. And it's the essential building block for next lesson's Type 3 hypotheses (si-clauses about the past).

Formation

Like all compound tenses, it uses an auxiliary verb (in the conditionnel présent) + a past participle.

Structure: Subject + AVOIR/ÊTRE (in conditionnel présent) + past participle

With AVOIR (most verbs):

Conditionnel of avoir: j'aurais, tu aurais, il aurait, nous aurions, vous auriez, ils auraient

J'aurais aimé visiter le Louvre, mais j'étais malade. (I would have liked to visit the Louvre, but I was sick.)
Il aurait pu m'aider ! (He could have helped me!)
Nous aurions préféré partir plus tôt. (We would have preferred to leave earlier.)

With ÊTRE (Dr & Mrs Vandertramp + reflexive verbs):

Conditionnel of être: je serais, tu serais, il serait, nous serions, vous seriez, ils seraient

Je serais venu à la fête, mais j'ai dû travailler. (I would have come to the party, but I had to work.)
Ils se seraient excusés s'ils avaient eu le temps. (They would have apologized if they had had the time.)
Elle serait partie plus tôt si elle avait su. (She would have left earlier if she had known.)

The Three Main Uses

1. Regrets & Reproaches

Devoir + past participle is incredibly common for regrets; pouvoir + past participle for missed opportunities or mild reproach.

J'aurais dû étudier plus. (I should have studied more.)
Tu aurais pu m'appeler ! (You could have called me!)
Nous n'aurions jamais dû accepter cette offre. (We should never have accepted that offer.)

2. Unverified Information (Journalistic French)

News anchors use this tense to report events that are not yet confirmed — a distinctly formal, written register worth recognizing in reading comprehension.

Le suspect se serait enfui vers l'Espagne. (The suspect allegedly fled toward Spain.)
Il y aurait eu un accident sur l'autoroute. (There reportedly was an accident on the highway.)
Selon des témoins, l'incendie aurait été provoqué volontairement. (According to witnesses, the fire was allegedly started deliberately.)

3. The Result Clause of a Type 3 Hypothesis (see next lesson for the full pattern)

Si j'avais su, je serais venu. (If I had known, I would have come.)

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1 — Using conditionnel présent instead of conditionnel passé for past regrets.

❌ Je devrais étudier plus hier. (mixing present conditional with a past time marker)
✅ J'aurais dû étudier plus hier.
Why: a regret about a completed past action needs the compound conditionnel passé, not the simple conditionnel présent.

Mistake 2 — Wrong auxiliary for movement/reflexive verbs.

❌ Elle aurait partie plus tôt.
✅ Elle serait partie plus tôt.
Why: partir is a Dr & Mrs Vandertramp verb — always être, even in the conditionnel passé.

Mistake 3 — Forgetting agreement with être-verbs.

❌ Elle serait venu à la fête.
✅ Elle serait venue à la fête.
Why: past participles with être agree in gender/number with the subject, exactly as in passé composé.

Mistake 4 — Confusing j'aurais dû (should have) with j'ai dû (had to / must have).

❌ Using j'ai dû faire ça to express regret about a choice not made.
✅ J'aurais dû faire ça for regret; j'ai dû faire ça means "I had to do that" (obligation that happened).
Why: these look similar but express completely different meanings — regret vs. past obligation.
