La Voix Passive — Focus on the Action

Why This Matters for Your Exam

Formal writing tasks on the DELF B1 — newspaper summaries, reports, formal emails — use the passive voice constantly. In TCF reading comprehension, passive constructions can be tricky to parse if you are not trained to recognise them. Using passive voice in your writing production immediately signals B1+ competence.

🦝 Remy says: "The passive voice puts the spotlight on WHAT happened, not WHO did it. News headlines love this: La loi a été adoptée. — perfect for formal writing!"

Core Lesson

The Formula

[Sujet (patient) + Être (any tense) + Participe Passé + par + Agent]

The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject.

| Active | Passive | |

|

| | Le directeur signe le contrat. | Le contrat est signé par le directeur. | | Les élèves ont réussi l'examen. | L'examen a été réussi par les élèves. | | On construira la route. | La route sera construite. |

Être in Every Tense

| Tense | Example | |

|

| | Présent | Le rapport est rédigé par l'équipe. | | Passé composé | La lettre a été envoyée hier. | | Imparfait | La maison était construite en pierre. | | Futur simple | Le projet sera approuvé la semaine prochaine. | | Conditionnel | Ce document serait signé demain. | | Subjonctif | Il faut que ce texte soit lu par tous. |

Agreement of the Past Participle

The past participle agrees with the subject of the passive sentence (not the agent).

La décision a été prise. (féminin singulier — décision) Les résultats ont été publiés. (masculin pluriel — résultats)

🦝 Remy says: "Agreement check: look left at the subject, then add -e, -s, or -es to the past participle. In the exam, one missing agreement = one lost mark!"

When to Omit the Agent

Omit par + agent when:

  • The agent is unknown or unimportant: La voiture a été volée.
  • The agent is obvious from context: Il a été élu président. (by voters — implied)
  • You want to keep focus on the action (formal news style).

Active → Passive / Passive → Active

Active → Passive:

  1. Object of active → Subject of passive
  2. Verb: être (same tense) + past participle (agreed)
  3. Subject of active → par + agent (or omit)

Passive → Active:

  1. Agent (par + noun) → new subject
  2. Verb: original tense, active form
  3. Passive subject → new object

Passive vs. ON

French often uses on instead of passive for informal contexts:

| Formal (Passive) | Informal (ON) | |

|

| | La porte a été fermée. | On a fermé la porte. | | Le résultat sera annoncé. | On annoncera le résultat. |

Use passive in formal writing tasks; use on in informal speech.

🎯 Today's Challenge

Write 2 original sentences in the passive voice: one about a news event (using passé composé) and one about something that will happen in the future (using futur simple). Include the agent in one and omit it in the other.

⭐ Key Takeaways

  • Agreement is non-negotiable: The past participle in a passive construction always agrees with the grammatical subject — check gender and number every time.
  • Être takes any tense: The tense of the action lives in être, not the past participle. Practice passive in futur and subjonctif — these appear in formal writing tasks.
  • Passive = formal; ON = informal: In DELF writing, default to passive for news/report style; reserve on for informal registers.
