Le Conditionnel Présent (Would)
Why This Matters for Your Exam
The conditionnel présent is a high-frequency structure on DELF B1 and TCF exams. It appears in writing tasks (expressing wishes, giving advice), reading comprehension (spotting hypotheticals), and oral production (polite requests). Examiners reward candidates who move beyond je veux to the more nuanced je voudrais.
🦝 Remy says: "Think of the conditionnel as your politeness superpower. On the exam, swapping je veux for je voudrais can lift your register score instantly!"
Questions:
- What does Clara want advice about? (where to go and eat in Lyon)
- Find two examples of polite conditionnel in the forum post. (voudrais, aimerions, auriez, devrais)
- What advice does Marc give, and with which verb form? (reserve ahead; conditionnel of devoir — "tu devrais")
Core Lesson
Formation
Formula: [Future stem + Imparfait endings]
The future stem is usually the infinitive (drop the final -e for -re verbs). Then add the imparfait endings:
| Pronoun | Ending | Exemple (parler) | |
|
--|
| | je | -ais | parlerais | | tu | -ais | parlerais | | il/elle | -ait | parlerait | | nous | -ions | parlerions | | vous | -iez | parleriez | | ils/elles | -aient | parleraient |
Irregular Stems
These stems are the same as the futur simple irregulars — learn them once, use them twice!
| Infinitif | Stem | Je form | |
--|
|
| | être | ser- | serais | | avoir | aur- | aurais | | aller | ir- | irais | | faire | fer- | ferais | | vouloir | voudr- | voudrais | | pouvoir | pourr- | pourrais | | venir | viendr- | viendrais | | savoir | saur- | saurais | | devoir | devr- | devrais | | voir | verr- | verrais | | envoyer | enverr- | enverrais | | falloir (il only) | faudr- | il faudrait |
Three Key Uses
1. Polite requests — softens direct demands:
- ❌ Je veux un café. (blunt, low register)
2. Advice with devoir — a favourite in oral exams:
- Tu devrais réviser tes conjugaisons ce soir.
- Vous devriez consulter un médecin.
- À ta place, je ne devrais pas répondre à ce message tout de suite.
- Il devrait faire plus attention à sa santé.
3. Hypothetical / imagined situations:
- Dans un monde idéal, je voyagerais partout en Europe.
- Si j'avais le temps, je lirais plus de livres.
- Avec un peu plus d'argent, nous achèterions une maison à la campagne.
- Que ferais-tu à ma place ?
4. Reported/softened information (journalistic conditionnel — good to recognize for reading comprehension):
- Selon les médias, le gouvernement augmenterait les impôts l'année prochaine.
- D'après certains témoins, l'accident aurait eu lieu vers minuit.
🦝 Remy says: "For the TCF expression écrite, describing your dream job or ideal holiday? Use the conditionnel freely — it signals B1 competence. Write at least two conditionnel sentences in every writing task!"
🔊 Phonétique: The conditionnel ending -rais/-rait/-raient is pronounced with a soft, closed "è" — don't over-stress the "r". Practice: je voudrais, tu devrais, il faudrait — notice the liaison-free glide from stem to ending, unlike the crisper "-er" of the infinitive.
Mini-Dialogue: Au Restaurant
Serveur : Bonsoir, vous avez choisi ? Cliente : Bonsoir.
(Waiter: Good evening, have you decided? Customer: Good evening. Yes, I would like the roast chicken with vegetables, please. Waiter: Very good. And to drink? Customer: Could you bring me a jug of water? And I would also like to see the dessert menu later. Waiter: Of course, no problem. Would you like anything else to start? Customer: No thank you, that will be all for now.)
Civilisation
In France, the vouvoiement combined with the conditionnel is the default register for any service interaction — restaurants, shops, government offices. Using tu and the présent ("je veux") with a stranger, especially an older person or an official, can come across as rude regardless of intent. Waitstaff themselves often use the conditionnel back ("Souhaiteriez-vous...?") as a mark of professional courtesy. This politeness code is tested directly on the DELF/TCF oral exam, where examiners assess register alongside grammar — a perfectly conjugated but blunt sentence can still cost points.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1 — Using conditionnel in the si-clause.
- Why: French never puts the conditionnel in the si-part of a sentence; the condition itself stays in présent (Type 1) or imparfait (Type 2). This is one of the most penalized errors at B1.
Mistake 2 — Confusing the imparfait and conditionnel endings for "je/tu".
- Why: both imparfait and conditionnel share the same endings (-ais, -ais, -ait...), but the stem differs — imparfait uses the nous-present stem, conditionnel uses the future stem. Compare: je parlais (imparfait) vs je parlerais (conditionnel) — the -er- is the giveaway.
Mistake 3 — Forgetting the irregular stem.
- ❌ Je voudrais... but then: Je pouvrais t'aider demain.
- ✅ Je pourrais t'aider demain.
- Why: pouvoir has the irregular stem pourr-, not a regularized pouvr-. These eight irregular stems must be memorized individually — no shortcut formula covers them.
Mistake 4 — Using vouloir instead of the conditionnel for politeness.
(sounds demanding in a formal context)
- Why: DELF/TCF examiners specifically listen for softened requests; vouloir in the présent reads as blunt in service or professional contexts.
Recap
- Conditionnel présent = future stem + imparfait endings (parlerais, finirais, prendrais...).
- Learn the 8+ irregular stems (être→ser-, avoir→aur-, aller→ir-, faire→fer-, vouloir→voudr-, pouvoir→pourr-, venir→viendr-, savoir→saur-, devoir→devr-, voir→verr-).
- Three core uses: polite requests, advice with devoir, and hypothetical/imagined situations.
- Golden rule: never put the conditionnel inside a si-clause — that mistake is graded down every time.
- Register boost: swapping je veux for je voudrais is one of the fastest ways to raise your DELF/TCF score.

🚀 Agissons !
Find a French restaurant, hotel, or shop website (or a francophone forum thread) and identify three real examples of the conditionnel used for politeness or hypothesis. Then write your own polite email in French requesting a reservation, using at least two conditionnel forms ("je voudrais," "pourriez-vous...").
🎯 Today's Challenge
Write 2 original sentences using the conditionnel présent:
- One polite request in a shop or restaurant.
- One sentence describing what you would do with more free time.
⭐ Key Takeaways
- Formation = future stem + imparfait endings. Memorise the irregular stems — they reappear in futur simple too.
- Never put conditionnel in a si-clause. This is one of the most common exam errors at B1.
- Register matters: je voudrais / nous aimerions / pourriez-vous lift your score in both written and oral tasks.
