Review: Verb Tenses Week 1
Why this matters
You've covered an enormous amount in the first week: three verb families, six essential irregular verbs, and the full range of French negation. Today is your consolidation day — a chance to make sure everything is solidly in place before we launch into the past tense. Think of it as a friendly check-in, not a test! Review days like this mirror exactly what the DELF A2 exam does: mixing verb families and negation types in a single exercise instead of testing them in isolation.
🦝 Remy says: "Review days are where real learning happens. You didn't just learn new things this week — you started building French intuition. Today we sharpen that into muscle memory."
Document Déclencheur
Message vocal, transcrit Salut ! Alors, je dois aller chez le médecin demain, je ne peux pas venir au brunch. Mais je ne veux pas rater ça complètement — on se voit dimanche plutôt ? Je viens dès que je peux !
What do you notice?
- Find every irregular verb from this week (aller, venir, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir) hiding in this one voicemail — how many can you count? (all five: dois, aller, peux, veux, viens)
- "je ne peux pas venir" and "je ne veux pas rater" both use ne...pas — can you find where the negation wraps around the modal, not the infinitive? (ne + peux/veux + pas, with the infinitive venir/rater left untouched after)
- This message packs a whole week of grammar into a few casual sentences — what does that tell you about how these structures actually get used? (real French mixes verb families, modals, and negation constantly and naturally, exactly like this review week trains you to do)
Week 1 Summary
Verb Families
| Family | Example | je form | il/elle form | ils form | |
--|
|
|
|
| | -ER | parler | je parle | il parle | ils parlent | | -IR | finir | je finis | il finit | ils finissent | | -RE | vendre | je vends | il vend | ils vendent |
Reminder of the spelling-change -ER verbs: commencer → nous commençons; manger → nous mangeons; essayer → j'essaie.
Key Irregular Verbs
| Verb | je | tu | il/elle | nous | vous | ils | |
|
-|
-|
|
|
|
--| | aller | vais | vas | va | allons | allez | vont | | venir | viens | viens | vient | venons | venez | viennent | | pouvoir | peux | peux | peut | pouvons | pouvez | peuvent | | vouloir | veux | veux | veut | voulons | voulez | veulent | | devoir | dois | dois | doit | devons | devez | doivent | | savoir | sais | sais | sait | savons | savez | savent |
Also remember: connaître (to know people/places) is different from savoir (facts/skills) — nous connaissons Paris, but nous savons parler français.
Negation Structures
| Structure | Meaning | |
--|
| | ne...pas | not | | ne...jamais | never | | ne...rien | nothing | | ne...plus | no longer | | ne...personne | nobody | | ne...que | only |
Rules to remember:
- Articles (un/une/du/de la/des) become de after negation — except after être.
- With modal + infinitive, ne...pas wraps the modal only.
- Never combine two negation words in the same clause.
🦝 Remy says: "Look at how much you know already! All six irregular verbs, three verb families, six ways to say 'no.' Your French brain is growing at a remarkable rate."
Full Mini-Dialogue — A Week 1 Grand Tour
- Amine : Tu vas au marché ce matin ? (Are you going to the market this morning?)
- Sarah : Non, je ne peux pas, je dois finir un rapport. (No, I can't, I have to finish a report.)
- Amine : Tu ne prends jamais de pause, toi ! (You never take a break, you!)
- Sarah : C'est vrai, mais je ne veux rien laisser pour demain. Je sais que je vais regretter si je ne finis pas aujourd'hui. (True, but I don't want to leave anything for tomorrow. I know I'll regret it if I don't finish today.)
Common Mistakes (Cross-Topic Review)
- ❌ Il vends sa voiture. → ✅ Il vend sa voiture. — the -RE family takes no ending in il/elle, unlike -ER and -IR.
- ❌ Je ne sais jamais rien. → ✅ Je ne sais rien. (or Je ne sais jamais.) — never stack two negation expressions in one clause.
- ❌ Nous connaissons parler français. → ✅ Nous savons parler français. — connaître never takes an infinitive; savoir does.
- ❌ Elle ne veut pas de partir. → ✅ Elle ne veut pas partir. — modal + infinitive needs no extra "de."
Recap
- Three verb families (-ER, -IR, -RE) plus six irregular verbs (aller, venir, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, savoir) form the backbone of present-tense French.
- All negation structures follow the same "sandwich" pattern around the conjugated verb.
- Savoir vs. connaître and article changes after negation are the two trickiest areas — review them again if unsure.
- Full mastery of Week 1 material makes Week 2's passé composé much easier, since it reuses these same conjugation instincts.
📝 Exercise 1 — Mixed conjugation
- Nous ________ (finir) à 17h.
- Vous ________ (aller) où ce week-end ?
- Elle ________ (vouloir) un café.
- Ils ________ (vendre) leur appartement.
- Je ________ (devoir) appeler ma mère.
- Tu ________ (connaître) ce restaurant ?
✅ Answers:
- finissons
- allez
- veut
- vendent
- dois
- connais
📝 Exercise 2 — Add the correct negation
Rewrite with the negation in brackets.
- Je mange de la viande. [ne...plus] → ___
- Il connaît quelqu'un ici. [ne...personne] → ___
- Tu regardes la télé. [ne...jamais] → ___
- Nous comprenons quelque chose. [ne...rien] → ___
- Elle a une voiture. [ne...pas] → ___

- Il ne connaît personne ici.
- Tu ne regardes jamais la télé.
- Nous ne comprenons rien.
- Elle n'a pas de voiture.
- Je n'ai que vingt euros.
📝 Exercise 3 — Translation (mixed)
- Can you (tu) repeat please? → ___
- They (f.) never eat breakfast. → ___
- We have to leave at 8. → ___
- She knows how to drive. → ___

- Tu peux répéter s'il te plaît ?
- Elles ne prennent jamais de petit-déjeuner.
- Nous devons partir à 8h.
- Elle sait conduire.
- Je vais au cinéma ce soir.
- Il ne travaille plus ici.
📝 Exercise 4 — Error correction
Find and fix the mistake in each sentence.
- Je ne sais jamais rien. (use only one negation)
- Il peut pas venir. (missing letter)
- Nous allons les courses. (wrong preposition)
- Elle ne veut de café. (missing word)
- Ils finissont leur travail. (wrong ending)
✅ Answers:
- Je ne sais rien. OR Je ne sais jamais. (two negatives = one meaning)
- Il ne peut pas venir.
- Nous allons faire les courses. (aller + infinitive for action)
- Elle ne veut pas de café.
- Ils finissent leur travail.
📝 Exercise 5 — Sentence building
Combine the elements into a full, correct French sentence.
- (nous / vouloir / ne...pas / partir maintenant) → ___
- (elle / connaître / ce quartier) → ___
- (tu / devoir / ne...jamais / mentir) → ___
- (ils / vendre / ne...plus / leur maison) → ___
✅ Model answers:
- Nous ne voulons pas partir maintenant.
- Elle connaît ce quartier.
- Tu ne dois jamais mentir.
- Ils ne vendent plus leur maison.
🎯 Today's challenge
Without looking at your notes, write six sentences in French — one using each irregular verb (aller, venir, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, savoir) — and include at least one negation. Then check them against the tables above. How many did you get right on the first try?
⭐ Key takeaways
- The three verb families cover most French verbs — -ER (largest), -IR, and -RE.
- Six key irregular verbs are too important to not know perfectly: aller, venir, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, savoir.
- All negation structures follow the same sandwich rule: ne before the verb, the negative word after — and never combine two negations.
- If Week 1 still feels shaky, revisit Days 1–6 before moving into passé composé — the past tense builds directly on these present-tense instincts.
Bonjour! Prêt à continuer la leçon? Allons-y!
