Asking About Appearance — Conversation Skills

Why This Matters

Knowing how to ask about appearance is just as important as knowing the vocabulary itself. These questions come up when you're meeting someone for the first time, shopping with a friend, or describing a person on the phone. Today's lesson focuses on the conversational side of descriptions — exactly the kind of interactive task ("jeu de rôle") examiners use in the DELF A2 oral exam.

Comparing Styles — Using Yesterday's Grammar

Combine comparatives with today's vocabulary:

  • Elle s'habille mieux que sa sœur. — She dresses better than her sister.
  • Il est moins élégant qu'avant. — He's less elegant than before.
  • C'est la personne la plus stylée du bureau! — She's the most stylish person in the office!
  • Ce manteau est aussi chic que celui de la vitrine. — This coat is just as chic as the one in the window.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Comment il regarde? (literal "how does he look at") → ✅ Comment est-il? / À quoi il ressemble? Why: English "what does he look like" tempts learners into a literal "regarder" translation, but appearance uses être or ressembler, not "regarder" (which means "to look at something").
  • ❌ Il ressemble comme son père → ✅ Il ressemble à son père. Why: ressembler is always followed by à, never "comme."
  • ❌ Ça vous va bon → ✅ Ça vous va bien. Why: "va" (from aller) is modified by the adverb bien, not the adjective "bon."
  • ❌ Il fait quel taille? → ✅ Il fait quelle taille? Why: taille is feminine, so the question word must agree — quelle, not quel.
