Reflexive Verbs in Passé Composé

Why This Matters

To tell a story in French — what happened yesterday, last weekend, on a trip — you need reflexive verbs in the past tense. This is one of the most common structures in spoken French, and getting it right will make you sound dramatically more fluent. It is also one of the top grammar points tested on the DELF A2 and TCF, since narrating a past day is a standard exam task.

🦝 Remy says: "Reflexive verbs in the past always use ÊTRE, not avoir. Think of it this way: you're describing what happened TO yourself — and être is the verb of 'being.'"

Document Déclencheur

Message, groupe de sport Hier, je me suis levée à 6h pour courir. Je me suis lavé les mains avant de manger, et je me suis reposée tout l'après-midi !

What do you notice?

  • "je me suis levée" and "je me suis reposée" both add an "e" — why, if this is the same speaker as "je me suis lavé les mains" which has NO extra "e"? (agreement depends on what follows: no direct object after → agrees with the subject "levée/reposée"; but "les mains" IS the direct object after "lavé," so the participle doesn't agree with "je")
  • Every verb here uses être, not avoir — what's the giveaway that these are reflexive rather than regular être-verbs like aller? (the "me/m'" pronoun right before the verb — reflexive verbs always keep their pronoun even in the past)
  • If a man had written "je me suis reposé," would the spelling change? (yes — no extra "e," since agreement follows the subject's actual gender)

Core Lesson

In the passé composé, reflexive verbs always use être as the auxiliary verb. This also means the past participle must agree with the subject.

The Formula:

Subject + reflexive pronoun + ÊTRE (conjugated) + past participle (agreed)

Full Conjugation: se réveiller (to wake up)

| Subject | Passé Composé | Notes | |

|

--|

-| | je (masc) | je me suis réveillé | base form | | je (fem) | je me suis réveillée | + E | | tu (masc) | tu t'es réveillé | | | tu (fem) | tu t'es réveillée | + E | | il | il s'est réveillé | | | elle | elle s'est réveillée | + E | | nous (masc/mixed) | nous nous sommes réveillés | + S | | nous (all fem) | nous nous sommes réveillées | + ES | | ils | ils se sont réveillés | + S | | elles | elles se sont réveillées | + ES |

Practical Examples

  • Je me suis levé(e) tôt. — I got up early.
  • Tu t'es habillé(e) vite? — Did you get dressed quickly?
  • Elle s'est couchée à minuit. — She went to bed at midnight.
  • Il s'est endormi sur le canapé. — He fell asleep on the sofa.
  • Nous nous sommes bien amusés! — We had a great time!
  • Elles se sont retrouvées au café. — They met up at the café.
  • Ils se sont dépêchés pour ne pas rater le train. — They hurried so as not to miss the train.
  • Je me suis souvenu(e) de son anniversaire juste à temps. — I remembered his birthday just in time.

Negation — very common!

Place ne before the reflexive pronoun and pas after être:

  • Je ne me suis pas réveillé(e) tôt. — I didn't wake up early.
  • Elle ne s'est pas couchée tard. — She didn't go to bed late.
  • Ils ne se sont pas amusés. — They didn't have fun.
  • Nous ne nous sommes pas dépêchés — on avait le temps. — We didn't hurry — we had time.

Important Exception — body part as direct object

When the reflexive verb has an explicit body part as its object, there is no agreement:

| Sentence | Agreement? | Why | |

-|

--|

--| | Elle s'est lavée. | ✅ Yes (+E) | She = the object | | Elle s'est lavé les mains. | ❌ No | "les mains" is the object | | Elle s'est brossé les dents. | ❌ No | "les dents" is the object | | Ils se sont lavé le visage. | ❌ No | "le visage" is the object |

🦝 Remy says: "The agreement rule is simple: who is the direct object? If it's the person themselves — agree! If there's a body part mentioned — no agreement. 'She washed HER HANDS,' not 'she washed herself.'"

Mini-Dialogue: Recounting yesterday

Léa : Raconte, comment s'est passée ta journée hier ? Sam : Je me suis réveillé très tôt, vers 5h30, et je ne me suis pas rendormi. Léa : Wow, tôt ! Et le soir, tu t'es couché à quelle heure ? Sam : On s'est retrouvés entre amis, on s'est bien amusés, et je me suis couché vers minuit. Léa : Et tu ne t'es pas disputé avec ton frère cette fois-ci ? Sam : Non, on s'est réconciliés la semaine dernière, donc tout va bien !

(Translation: "Tell me, how did your day go yesterday?" / "I woke up very early, around 5:30, and I didn't fall back asleep." / "Wow, early! And in the evening, what time did you go to bed?" / "We met up with friends, we had a great time, and I went to bed around midnight." / "And you didn't argue with your brother this time?" / "No, we made up last week, so everything's fine!")

Common Mistakes

  • Elle a se levée → ✅ Elle s'est levée. — Reflexive verbs never use avoir; the auxiliary is always être.
  • Elle s'est lavé (meaning "she washed herself") → ✅ Elle s'est lavée. — Without an explicit body-part object, the participle must agree with the subject.
  • Elle s'est lavée les mains → ✅ Elle s'est lavé les mains. — Here the body part IS the direct object, so no agreement — a common overcorrection once learners learn the agreement rule.
  • Je ne suis pas me levé → ✅ Je ne me suis pas levé(e). — Ne goes before the reflexive pronoun, not between suis and pas.

Recap

  • Reflexive verbs in the passé composé always use être, never avoir, as the auxiliary.
  • The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject — unless an explicit direct object (usually a body part) follows the verb.
  • Negation wraps: ne + reflexive pronoun + être + pas + participle.
  • This structure is essential for narrating a past day — a frequent DELF A2/TCF task.
