Reflexive Verbs: Daily Routine

Why this matters

Reflexive verbs are the key to describing daily routines — and French has many of them. Waking up, getting dressed, brushing your teeth, going to bed — all of these are reflexive in French. Once you understand the pattern, you can describe your entire day. And you'll need to, because talking about your daily life is one of the most frequent conversation topics — and a guaranteed DELF A2 speaking-exam prompt ("Racontez votre journée typique").

🦝 Remy says: "Reflexive verbs are called that because the action reflects back on the subject — you do it to yourself. Je me lève — I get (myself) up. Once you see that logic, the whole system makes perfect sense!"

Document Déclencheur

Routine, article de blog Je me réveille à 7h. Je me lève tout de suite — pas de bouton snooze ! Je me douche, je m'habille, et je me prépare un café avant de partir.

What do you notice?

  • Count the reflexive pronouns (me, m') before each verb — how many reflexive actions happen before this person even leaves the house? (five: me réveille, me lève, me douche, m'habille, me prépare)
  • "je me prépare un café" — is the person making the coffee FOR themselves in a reflexive sense, or is "me" doing something else here? (it's more like "for myself" — a slightly different reflexive use than pure self-action, still marking the self as beneficiary)
  • Why does "je me lève tout de suite" need "me" at all — couldn't you just say "je lève"? (je lève alone would need an object, like "je lève la main" — without "me," it's grammatically incomplete for "getting oneself up")

What Makes a Verb Reflexive?

Reflexive verbs have a reflexive pronoun between the subject and verb:

| Subject | Reflexive pronoun | |

|

| | je | me (m' before vowel) | | tu | te (t' before vowel) | | il/elle/on | se (s' before vowel) | | nous | nous | | vous | vous | | ils/elles | se |

Pattern: Subject + reflexive pronoun + verb

Examples of the elision rule (pronoun shortens before a vowel or mute h):

  • Je m'habille. — I get dressed. (not "je me habille")
  • Elle s'ennuie. — She's bored.
  • Tu t'appelles comment ? — What's your name?

Morning Routine Reflexive Verbs

| Infinitive | Meaning | Example | |

|

|

| | se réveiller | to wake up | Je me réveille à 7h. = I wake up at 7. | | se lever | to get up | Tu te lèves quand ? = When do you get up? | | se laver | to wash (oneself) | Il se lave les mains. = He washes his hands. | | se doucher | to shower | Elle se douche le matin. = She showers in the morning. | | se brosser les dents | to brush one's teeth | Je me brosse les dents. = I brush my teeth. | | se raser | to shave | Il se rase chaque matin. = He shaves every morning. | | se maquiller | to put on makeup | Elle se maquille rapidement. = She puts on makeup quickly. | | se coiffer | to do one's hair | Tu te coiffes bien ! = You style your hair nicely! | | s'habiller | to get dressed | Nous nous habillons. = We get dressed. | | se préparer | to get ready | Il se prépare en 10 minutes. = He gets ready in 10 minutes. | | se peigner | to comb one's hair | Elle se peigne devant le miroir. = She combs her hair in front of the mirror. | | se dépêcher | to hurry | On se dépêche, on est en retard ! = We're hurrying, we're late! |

More examples in context:

  • Je me lève toujours avant mon mari. — I always get up before my husband.
  • Elle se douche puis se maquille en dix minutes chrono. — She showers then puts on makeup in ten minutes flat.
  • Nous nous dépêchons parce que le bus part à 8h. — We hurry because the bus leaves at 8.
  • Il ne se rase pas le week-end. — He doesn't shave on weekends.

Mini-Dialogue: A rushed morning

Maman : Dépêche-toi ! Tu te lèves à quelle heure d'habitude ? Théo : Je me réveille à 6h30, mais je me lève seulement à 6h45 ! Maman : Et tu te douches avant ou après le petit-déjeuner ? Théo : Je me douche avant, je m'habille, et je me brosse les dents juste avant de partir. Maman : Alors dépêche-toi, on part dans cinq minutes !

(Translation: "Hurry up! What time do you usually get up?" / "I wake up at 6:30, but I only get up at 6:45!" / "And do you shower before or after breakfast?" / "I shower first, get dressed, and brush my teeth right before leaving." / "Then hurry, we're leaving in five minutes!")

Full Conjugation: Se Lever

| Pronoun | Full form | Pronunciation | |

|

--|

--| | je | je me lève | [zhuh muh lehv] | | tu | tu te lèves | [tü tuh lehv] | | il/elle | il se lève | [eel suh lehv] | | nous | nous nous levons | [noo noo luh-vohn] | | vous | vous vous levez | [voo voo luh-vay] | | ils/elles | ils se lèvent | [eel suh lehv] |

🦝 Remy's memory trick: "Notice that nous nous and vous vous look doubled up — that's not a typo! The first one is the subject pronoun, the second is the reflexive pronoun. Say it fast and it sounds totally natural: 'noo noo luh-vohn.' Like a little rhythm!"

Negation with Reflexive Verbs

In negation, ne goes before the reflexive pronoun:

  • Je ne me lève pas tôt. = I don't get up early.
  • Elle ne se maquille pas le week-end. = She doesn't wear makeup on weekends.
  • Ils ne se préparent jamais rapidement. = They never get ready quickly.
  • Nous ne nous dépêchons plus — on est en avance ! = We're not hurrying anymore — we're early!

Common Mistakes

  • Je habille / Je me habille → ✅ Je m'habille. — Before a vowel sound, the reflexive pronoun must elide (me → m').
  • Je lave (meaning "I wash myself") → ✅ Je me lave. — Forgetting the reflexive pronoun entirely is the most common error; without it, "laver" just means "to wash [something]," not "to wash oneself."
  • Nous levons à 7h → ✅ Nous nous levons à 7h. — With nous/vous, learners often drop the reflexive pronoun since the subject pronoun looks similar — but both are required.
  • Je ne lève pas me tôt → ✅ Je ne me lève pas tôt. — Ne goes before the reflexive pronoun, not between the pronoun and verb.

Recap

  • Reflexive verbs need a reflexive pronoun (me/te/se/nous/vous/se) matching the subject, placed right before the verb.
  • The pronoun elides to m'/t'/s' before a vowel sound.
  • Negation wraps around the pronoun + verb: ne + pronoun + verb + pas.
  • Morning routine reflexives — se réveiller, se lever, se doucher, se brosser les dents, s'habiller, se préparer — are essential everyday vocabulary and a common DELF A2 topic.
