Why this matters

In France, talking about family is a fundamental social ritual — at dinner parties, in casual conversation, meeting new people. A1 gave you the basics (mother, father, brother, sister). Now you need the full picture: grandparents, cousins, in-laws, step-relatives, and the language to describe relationships. This vocabulary is deeply personal and highly memorable.

🦝 Remy's memory trick: "Beau/belle in family words = 'in-law' or 'step.' So belle-mère is literally 'beautiful mother' but it means mother-in-law! French was being polite about it. Very tactful."
