Imparfait — Describing the Past in Progress
Why this matters
You know how to talk about completed past events with the passé composé. But what about painting the background of a story? Describing what was happening or what you used to do? That's the imparfait — the tense that gives texture and color to your past narratives. Together with passé composé, these two tenses are the backbone of French storytelling.
The imparfait is heavily tested at DELF A2, especially in the written production task ("Racontez un souvenir d'enfance..."). Examiners want to see you can distinguish ongoing/habitual past from single completed events — that's exactly what Day 12 will drill further.
🦝 Remy says: "If passé composé is the action movie (things happening, BAM BAM BAM), the imparfait is the soundtrack and scenery. It sets the mood. Good storytelling needs both — and you're about to have both!"
What do you notice?
- "j'étais", "on habitait", "il faisait", "je jouais" — none of these describe a single completed action. What do they describe instead? (ongoing states and repeated habits from childhood — background, not events)
- "tous les jours" (every day) and "toujours" (always) appear alongside imparfait verbs — coincidence? (no — words like "tous les jours," "toujours," "souvent" are classic imparfait triggers, signaling repetition/habit)
- If this person wanted to describe ONE specific day something unusual happened (like "one day, it rained"), would they still use imparfait? (no — a single, specific event would switch to passé composé: "un jour, il a plu")
Forming the Imparfait
The imparfait is beautifully regular. Take the nous form of the present tense, drop -ons, then add these endings:
| Pronoun | Ending | |
|
--| | je | -ais | | tu | -ais | | il/elle/on | -ait | | nous | -ions | | vous | -iez | | ils/elles | -aient |
Example: parler → nous parlons → stem: parl-
| Pronoun | Imparfait | |
|
--| | je | parlais | | tu | parlais | | il/elle | parlait | | nous | parlions | | vous | parliez | | ils/elles | parlaient |
Example: finir → nous finissons → stem: finiss-
| Pronoun | Imparfait | |
|
Example: faire → nous faisons → stem: fais-
| Pronoun | Imparfait | |
|
--| | je | faisais | | tu | faisais | | il/elle | faisait | | nous | faisions | | vous | faisiez | | ils/elles | faisaient |
The only irregular stem: ÊTRE → ét- (j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient)
When to Use the Imparfait
Use the imparfait for:
1. Ongoing past actions / background descriptions
- Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. = It was raining when I went out.
- La musique jouait, les gens dansaient. = Music was playing, people were dancing.
- Le soleil brillait et les oiseaux chantaient. = The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
2. Habitual or repeated past actions (used to)
= When I was a child, I used to play football.
- Chaque matin, elle buvait un café. = Every morning, she would have a coffee.
= Every Sunday, we used to visit my grandparents.
3. Descriptions of states or feelings in the past
- J'avais faim. = I was hungry.
- Il était fatigué. = He was tired.
- Nous adorions ce restaurant. = We used to love this restaurant.
= She was afraid of dogs when she was little.
4. Setting the scene at the start of a story
- C'était un jour d'hiver. Il faisait froid et il neigeait. = It was a winter day. It was cold and snowing.
🦝 Remy's memory trick: "The imparfait endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -aient all have an 'ai' in them — say 'ay' like you're thinking nostalgically. Like sighing about the past: 'Those were the days... j'étais jeune, j'aimais la vie...'"
Mini-Dialogue: Souvenirs d'enfance
— Where did you live when you were little? — I lived in the countryside. There was a big house with a garden. — Did you have fun there? — Yes! Every summer, I used to play outside all day and my parents would make barbecues.
Common Mistakes
- Using imparfait for a single completed event. Use passé composé for one-time, finished events with a clear endpoint.
- Conjugating from the infinitive instead of the nous-stem. ❌ je prendrais (this is actually conditional!) for imparfait of prendre. ✅ nous prenons → stem pren- → je prenais.
- Forgetting the -ge or -ç- spelling adjustment. With verbs like manger and commencer, keep the soft sound: je mangeais (not mangais), je commençais (not commencais) before -ais, -ait, -aient endings.
- Treating être as regular. ❌ j'étrais or forming from a wrong stem. ✅ être's imparfait stem is irregular: ét- (j'étais, tu étais, il était...).
Recap
- Imparfait = nous-present stem (minus -ons) + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
- Use it for: ongoing past actions, habits/repeated past actions, descriptions/states, and scene-setting.
- Être is the only irregular stem: ét-.
- Watch spelling adjustments for -ger and -cer verbs (mangeais, commençais).
