Day 4: The Most Important Verb - ÊTRE (To Be)
Master the verb 'être' (to be) in all its forms and learn how to use it to describe identity, profession, location, and feelings.
Pascal says: If French were a house, the verb être (to be) would be the foundation. You'll use it constantly to say who you are, what you do, and how you feel. Let's master this essential verb together!
🎯 Today's Mission
- Memorize the 6 key forms of the verb être.
- Learn the 4 primary uses of être.
- Practice using être in sentences.
Section 1: The 6 Forms of ÊTRE
Être is an irregular verb, which means its forms don't follow a neat pattern. You just have to memorize them. But don't worry, you'll use them so often they'll become second nature!
- Je suis [zhuh SWEE] - I am
- Tu es [tew EH] - You are (informal)
- Il/Elle est [eel/el EH] - He/She is
- Nous sommes [noo SUM] - We are
- Vous êtes [voo ZET] - You are (formal or plural)
- Ils/Elles sont [eel/el SOHN] - They are (masculine/feminine)
Pascal's Tip: Listen closely to the 's' sounds. In "nous sommes", the 's' at the end of "nous" is silent. But in "vous êtes", the 's' in "vous" links to the 'ê' and makes a 'z' sound! This is called a liaison.
Which form of 'être' goes with 'je'?
Which form of 'être' goes with 'nous'?
How do you say 'They are' for a group of women?
Section 2: What is ÊTRE used for?
You'll use être in hundreds of situations. Here are the main ones for now:
1. Your Identity:
- Je suis Pascal. - I am Pascal.
- Elle est française. - She is French.
2. Your Profession:
- Il est médecin. - He is a doctor.
- Nous sommes étudiants. - We are students.
- Important: In French, you don't use "a" or "an" (un/une) when stating your profession with être.
3. Your Location:
- Tu es à Paris. - You are in Paris.
- Ils sont à la maison. - They are at home.
4. How you feel or what you're like (Adjectives):
- Je suis content. - I am happy.
- Vous êtes fatigués. - You are tired.
Complete the sentence: Je ___ étudiant.
