Qu'est-ce que tu fais dans la vie ? — "What do you do in life?" — is one of the very first questions a French person will ask you. Knowing how to talk about jobs opens the door to real adult conversation and helps you understand French society.

Key rule — no article after ÊTRE with professions!

In English we say "I am a teacher." In French, you drop the article entirely:
