Talking About Family
Why This Matters
"Tell me about your family" is one of the first things a French speaker will ask you. Today you combine everything from this week — family vocabulary, possessive adjectives, AVOIR, ÊTRE, and appearance — into real, flowing conversation.
🦝 Remy says: "You've been collecting puzzle pieces all week: family words, possessives, descriptions, AVOIR. Today we put the puzzle together. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to hold a real conversation about your family in French. That's a huge deal!"

Building a Family Description
Here's the structure for a full, natural-sounding family introduction:
Step 1 — Say who is in your family (AVOIR): J'ai un frère, une sœur et mes deux parents. I have one brother, one sister, and my two parents.
Step 2 — Give some details about each person (possessives + ÊTRE + AVOIR): Mon frère s'appelle Thomas. Il a 24 ans et il est grand avec les cheveux bruns. My brother is called Thomas. He is 24 and he's tall with brown hair.
Step 3 — Say where they live or what they do: Ma sœur est étudiante. Elle habite à Bordeaux. My sister is a student. She lives in Bordeaux.
Step 4 — Add something personal or warm: Mes parents sont très gentils. Ils habitent à Lyon depuis vingt ans. My parents are very kind. They have lived in Lyon for twenty years.
A Full Model Paragraph
Read this aloud, slowly, using the pronunciation hints you've learned:
J'ai une famille assez grande. J'ai deux frères et une sœur. Mon frère aîné s'appelle Marc — il a 32 ans et il est médecin. Il est grand et mince avec les cheveux noirs. Ma sœur s'appelle Camille. Elle a 27 ans et elle est drôle et sympathique. Mes parents habitent à Nantes. Mon père a 60 ans et ma mère a 58 ans. Ils sont à la retraite maintenant.
I have quite a large family. I have two brothers and a sister. My eldest brother is called Marc — he is 32 and he is a doctor. He is tall and slim with black hair. My sister is called Camille. She is 27 and she is funny and likeable. My parents live in Nantes. My father is 60 and my mother is 58. They are retired now.
🦝 Remy says: "Notice how naturally AVOIR and ÊTRE alternate in that paragraph: 'Il a 32 ans' (AVOIR for age), 'Il est médecin' (ÊTRE for profession), 'Il est grand' (ÊTRE for appearance), 'Il a les cheveux noirs' (AVOIR for features). Your brain will start doing this automatically — trust the process!"

Record a 60-second voice note in French introducing your family — real or imaginary. Use at least: two family members by name, their ages (AVOIR), their appearance (ÊTRE + AVOIR), and where they live. Don't aim for perfection — aim for completion. Play it back and listen with pride.

- Combine AVOIR + possessives + ÊTRE + appearance vocab to describe family naturally.
- AVOIR → age and features (il a 30 ans / il a les yeux verts)
- ÊTRE → profession and personality (elle est médecin / il est sympathique)
