How to Score CLB 9 in TCF Canada Speaking
Cracking the TCF Canada Speaking Test
To get your permanent residency, scoring a CLB 9 (Niveau C1) is the ultimate goal. Here is exactly what the examiners are grading you on.
What Examiners Actually Look For
The TCF Canada speaking component is graded on four criteria: fluency, lexical range, grammatical accuracy, and coherence. A C1 score requires you to excel in all four simultaneously.
Task 1: The Interview (2 mins)
This is your warm-up. They will ask you simple questions about your life, work, and hobbies. The key here is fluency without hesitation. Do not give one-word answers! Always develop your point with an explanation or example.
Task 2: Obtaining Information (3.5 mins)
You must ask the examiner questions based on a prompt (e.g., "You saw an ad for a gym. Call and ask questions"). To score C1, you must use complex question structures, not just "Est-ce que...".
- Pourriez-vous m'indiquer quels sont vos tarifs ?
- Je me demandais s'il y avait des frais d'inscription...
- Serait-il possible de bénéficier d'un essai gratuit ?
Task 3: Expressing an Opinion (4.5 mins)
This is where you earn your C1. You must read a short text and debate the topic. You absolutely must structure your argument using advanced connectors: Cependant, Néanmoins, En outre, Il est indéniable que...
A winning structure: State your position → First argument + example → Counter-argument → Reinforce your position with nuance.
