What Makes TEF Canada Different From TCF Canada

The TEF Canada (Test d'Évaluation de Français) is one of two French language tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration. It measures the same four skills as the TCF Canada — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and maps to the same CLB scale. But the format, difficulty curve, and time demands are meaningfully different. Candidates who prepare for TEF Canada as if it were identical to TCF Canada often find themselves underprepared for the longer writing tasks and more open-ended speaking section.

TEF Canada Format: What You Will Face

• Listening (Compréhension de l'oral): 60 questions, 40 minutes. Multiple-choice across 5 document types: phone messages, radio extracts, conversations, interviews, debates. CLB 3 to 12.
• Reading (Compréhension de l'écrit): 50 questions, 60 minutes. Multiple-choice across informational texts, articles, and formal documents. CLB 3 to 12.
• Writing (Expression écrite): 2 tasks — a formal letter (approximately 200 words) and an argumentative essay (approximately 200 words). 60 minutes total. CLB 3 to 12.
• Speaking (Expression orale): 3 tasks, approximately 15 minutes face-to-face with an examiner. Includes a monologue, an information-exchange task, and a point-of-view discussion. CLB 3 to 12.

The key differences from TCF Canada: more questions in Listening and Reading, longer and more formal writing tasks, and a longer speaking section. The total test duration for TEF Canada is approximately 3 hours 45 minutes — significantly longer than TCF Canada's 2.5 hours.

How TEF Canada Writing Is Scored

TEF Canada writing is evaluated on four criteria: task completion, coherence and cohesion, lexical range, and grammatical accuracy. The writing tasks are open-ended — there is no multiple-choice to fall back on. Your words are your only resource. At CLB 7 and above, examiners expect formal register, complex sentence structures, a range of connectors, and accurate accents throughout.

The formal letter task requires you to write in an appropriate epistolary format — correct opening (Madame, Monsieur,), developed body paragraphs, and a polite closing (Veuillez agréer… or Cordialement,). Candidates who are not familiar with French formal letter conventions lose points immediately on task completion.

Preparing the Writing Section: The Most Important Investment

Writing is the TEF Canada skill that separates candidates who score CLB 7 from those who fall short of it. It is also the skill that responds fastest to deliberate practice. The mechanism is simple: write regularly in exam format, under time pressure, with accurate accents, and improve your structure each session.
