How to Ask Questions in French: From Street Slang to Formal Inversion
The 3 Levels of French Questions
Asking a question in English is pretty straightforward: we usually just swap the subject and the verb or add "do" (e.g., "Do you like coffee?"). In French, however, you have three entirely different ways to ask the exact same question, depending on who you are talking to and how formal you want to be.
1. The Casual Way: Intonation (Spoken French)
If you are hanging out with friends or talking to people on the street, this is the only structure you need. You simply take a normal, declarative sentence and raise the pitch of your voice at the very end. It is fast, easy, and incredibly common.
- Statement: Tu aimes le café. (You like coffee.)
- Question: Tu aimes le café ? (You like coffee?)
2. The Standard Way: "Est-ce que" (Everyday French)
When in doubt, use est-ce que. This magical phrase literally translates to "is it that," but it functions exactly like the English "Do" or "Does." You put it at the very beginning of a normal sentence to instantly turn it into a question. It is perfect for both speaking and writing.
- Est-ce que tu aimes le café ? (Do you like coffee?)
- Est-ce qu'il travaille aujourd'hui ? (Is he working today?) - Note: "que" contracts to "qu'" before a vowel!
3. The Formal Way: Inversion (Written & Exams)
This is the most elegant and formal way to ask a question. You will see it in literature, formal emails, and journalism. To do this, you swap the subject pronoun and the verb, connecting them with a hyphen.
- Aimes-tu le café ? (Do you like coffee?)
- Pouvez-vous m'aider ? (Can you help me?)
The "T" Rule: If you invert a verb that ends in a vowel with the pronouns il, elle, or on, you must insert a "-t-" between them to make it easier to pronounce.
A-t-il un chien ? (Does he have a dog?)
Adding Question Words (Où, Quand, Pourquoi)
If you need to ask Who, What, Where, When, or Why, you just plug the question word into the structures above. However, the placement changes based on the formality!
- Casual (Intonation): The word goes at the END. -> Tu vas où ? (You are going where?)
- Standard (Est-ce que): The word goes at the BEGINNING. -> Où est-ce que tu vas ? (Where are you going?)
- Formal (Inversion): The word goes at the BEGINNING. -> Où vas-tu ? (Where are you going?)
