Express Entry Specialty Categories 2026: Physicians, Nurses, Trades Get Fast-Track Invites
The Specialty Categories Launch (February 2026)
Express Entry just launched occupation-specific draws. Instead of ranking all applicants equally, IRCC now has dedicated streams for critical shortage occupations.
Translation: If you're a physician, nurse, or skilled tradesperson, your CRS cutoff is MUCH lower.
The 5 Specialty Categories
1. Healthcare: Physicians & Surgeons
Eligible NOC codes: 3111 (Physicians and surgeons)
CRS cutoff 2026: 169 (LOWEST EVER)
Requirements:
- Canadian provincial medical license (licensing college registration)
- CLB 7+ English or NCLC 7+ French
- 1+ year Canadian medical work experience
Why so low? Canada has critical physician shortage. Every doctor counts.
2. Healthcare: Nurses & Nurse Practitioners
Eligible NOC codes: 3012 (Nurses), 3233 (Nurse practitioners)
CRS cutoff 2026: 200 (Very Low)
Requirements:
- Canadian provincial nursing license/registration
- CLB 6+ English or NCLC 6+ French
- 6+ months Canadian nursing work experience
3. Skilled Trades: Electricians, Plumbers, Welders
Eligible NOC codes: 7241 (Electricians), 7251 (Plumbers), 7265 (Welders)
CRS cutoff 2026: 240-300 (Lower than general 520+)
Requirements:
- Canadian provincial journeyperson ticket (trade certification)
- CLB 5+ English or NCLC 5+ French
- 2+ years Canadian skilled work experience
4. Researchers & University Professors
Eligible NOC codes: 4011 (University professors), 2121 (Researchers)
CRS cutoff 2026: 280-320
Requirements:
- Master's or PhD in relevant field
- CLB 7+ English (for academic work)
- 2+ years Canadian research/teaching experience
5. Transport & Logistics: Truck Drivers, Heavy Equipment
Eligible NOC codes: 7411 (Truck drivers), 7301 (Heavy equipment operators)
CRS cutoff 2026: 260-290
Requirements:
- Valid provincial Class A commercial driver's license (or equivalent)
- CLB 4+ English
- 1+ year Canadian driving/logistics experience

How to Qualify
- Check if your NOC code is in a specialty category
- Get Canadian professional license/certification (most important)
- Gain required Canadian work experience (6 months - 2 years)
- Complete Express Entry profile with your NOC code
- Wait for specialty draw (IRCC does these regularly)
- Get invited at low CRS score
Bottom Line
If you're in a critical shortage occupation, specialty Express Entry categories are game-changers. Physicians invited at CRS 169. Nurses at 200. If you have Canadian professional credentials, you're nearly guaranteed an ITA.
