The DELF B2 Written Production: What You're Graded On

The production écrite is worth 25 points and is divided into: coherence & cohesion (7pts), lexical range (6pts), grammatical accuracy (6pts), and respect of the task (6pts). The fastest way to lose points is poor structure, not poor vocabulary.

The Winning Essay Plan

Always write between 250–300 words. Less is penalised; more rarely adds points. Use this four-part structure every single time:

Part 1: Introduction (40–50 words)

  • Introduce the topic with context
  • State that the subject raises a debate or question
  • Announce your plan: "Nous verrons d'abord… puis nous examinerons…"

Part 2: First Argument (80–90 words)

  • State your main point clearly
  • Support with a specific example or data
  • Conclude with a mini-synthesis of this point

Part 3: Counter-argument + Nuance (80–90 words)

  • Introduce with: "Cependant," / "Il convient néanmoins de noter que…"
  • Present a valid opposing view
  • Qualify it: show why your first argument still holds despite this

Part 4: Conclusion (40–50 words)

  • Summarise both sides briefly
  • Give a clear, personal final position
  • End with an opening question or broader perspective

Essential Opening Phrases

  • De nos jours, la question de… suscite de nombreux débats.
  • Il est indéniable que… joue un rôle crucial dans notre société.
  • Face à ce constat, on peut se demander si…

Common Mistakes That Cost Points

  • Writing an opinion piece instead of a structured argument
  • Using "je" in every sentence — vary with "on peut affirmer que", "force est de constater que"
  • Forgetting to connect paragraphs with logical connectors
  • Going under 250 words
